Understanding EMDR and EFT: Two Powerful Tools for Healing

When it comes to healing from anxiety, depression, or trauma, talk therapy isn’t the only option. Two evidence-based approaches—EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique, or tapping)—can help you process difficult experiences and find relief, even if you’ve tried other forms of therapy before.

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a structured therapy that helps your brain process and make sense of distressing memories. During EMDR sessions, you’ll recall a troubling memory while following gentle, guided movements with your eyes (or sometimes tapping or sounds). This process helps “unstick” memories and reduce their emotional charge, so they no longer feel overwhelming.

EMDR is often used for:

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Anxiety, stress and panic

  • Depression

  • Grief and loss

  • Phobias

EMDR can do a lot of the same things EFT can do.

What is EFT (Tapping)?

EFT combines gentle tapping on specific points of the body (similar to acupuncture points) with focused attention on a problem or emotion. The tapping sends calming signals to the brain, helping you release stress and reduce the intensity of negative feelings.

EFT can help with:

  • Anxiety and worry

  • Stress

  • Self-criticism

  • Pain and physical symptoms

  • Cravings or unwanted habits

What to Expect in a Session

  • EMDR: Sessions are structured and paced at your comfort level. You’ll be guided to focus on a memory while using eye movements, tapping, or sounds. Many people notice shifts in how they feel about past events—even after just a few sessions. I also offer EMDR Intensive sessions (1.5 hour, 3 hour or 6 hour sessions) to work through the

  • EFT: You’ll learn simple tapping sequences and phrases to use during sessions and on your own. It’s a gentle, non-invasive technique that can be adapted for many issues.

Which Is Right for Me?

Both EMDR and EFT are safe, effective, and adaptable to your needs. You don’t have to choose one over the other—many people benefit from a blend of approaches, tailored to their goals and comfort.
